OCZ 2GB DDR2 PC2-8500 Reaper HPC CrossFire Certified Edition

Introduction

It’s been a while since our last memory kit review but what better way to start it off with one unique and innovative memory kit by the memory giant OCZ; the 2GB PC2-8500 REAPER HPC (Heat Pipe Conduit ) CrossFire Certified memory kit. The PC2 8500 series originally was released last year but now they have released a new CrossFire certified version for the hardcore enthusiast. Upon first glance anyone who looks at these REAPER HPC modules are going to be quite intrigued as they don’t look like any other conventional memory module out there.

What make these modules special are its heat pipe copper conduits that help to keep these modules at the lowest possible operating temperature. Normally heat pipe technology is used on higher end CPU coolers but it’s certainly good to see memory modules coming out with them as well. Generally you won’t see memory heating up to levels that would require this level of cooling however considering the extreme levels people push their systems these days, it’s always better to have the best cooling possible on every component.

Since DDR3 isn’t expected to arrive for the AMD platform until the latter part of 2008 this is the best time to get DDR2 memory as their prices have come down considerably. Prices generally range from around US$80-$230 so it’s very affordable even for a high end dual channel kit. What’s cool about OCZ’s warranty is that these CrossFire certified modules are rated to handle upto 2.35V of voltage without having to worry about voiding OCZ’s lifetime warranty, which is great news for overclockers.
