Epson EcoTank ET-2911 Review
The Epson EcoTank ET-2911 is one of Epson’s latest entry-level cartridge-free printers, designed for home users who want low running costs without sacrificing print quality. The ET-2911 succeeds the ET-2811 model in Epson’s 2026 refresh, maintaining the same core tank technology while updating connectivity features. Combining print, scan, and copy functions with wireless connectivity and Epson’s proven EcoTank system, the ET-2911 aims to solve one of the biggest frustrations of home printing: expensive ink cartridges.
With its high yield ink tanks the Epson EcoTank ET-2911 is supposed to deliver up to 3,600 black and 6,500 color pages. With print speeds of 11 ppm for black and 6 ppm for color, the Epson EcoTank ET2911 positions itself as an excellent choice for large-volume printing at the lowest cost possible.

Epson offers a standard 12 months warranty on the ET-2911 and an extra 12 months if you register your device after purchase at https://www.epson.com.au/registrations. Surprisingly there’s no USB cable provided with the device and make note that the ET-2911 does not come with an ethernet port if that matters.
EcoTank Technology Explained
The Epson EcoTank ET-2911 replaces traditional ink cartridges with integrated refillable tanks built directly into the printer body. Rather than purchasing disposable cartridges every few weeks, you fill the tanks with bottled ink that ships with the unit. The ET-2911 comes bundled with enough ink to print 3,600 black pages and 6,500 color pages, which Epson claims represents the equivalent of about 204 individual cartridges.
This cartridge-free design uses color-coded bottles with keyed openings that prevent you from filling the wrong tank. The bottles automatically stop dispensing once a tank reaches capacity, eliminating spills and guesswork. You can monitor ink levels through transparent front-facing tanks without opening anything or checking your computer.
Design and Build Quality
The ET-2911 follows Epson’s familiar compact EcoTank design. At just 4.1kg, it is lightweight enough for a desk or bookshelf while maintaining a surprisingly solid feel.

The front-mounted transparent ink tanks allow you to visually monitor ink levels without opening covers or relying on software estimates.

One of the most impressive aspects of the EcoTank range is the bottle filling system. Epson’s keyed bottle design prevents users from accidentally filling the wrong colour tank, making refills almost foolproof and significantly less messy than older continuous ink systems.
The printer lacks some premium features such as:
- Automatic duplex printing
- Automatic document feeder (ADF)
- Touchscreen display
- Ethernet connectivity
If the above features are important to you, look for one of their higher grades Epson offers. However at this price point it’s not surprising that Epson left some of these features out even though I’d expect duplex printing to be a standard feature in this time and age.
The Real Star: PrecisionCore MicroPiezo Printhead Technology
This is where the ET-2911 differentiates itself from many competing inkjet printers.
Unlike most consumer inkjet printers from HP and Canon that use thermal inkjet technology, Epson uses its proprietary MicroPiezo printhead technology.
How Thermal Inkjet Works
Traditional thermal inkjet printers:
- Heat ink inside tiny chambers.
- Create a bubble.
- Force ink droplets onto paper.
- Repeat thousands of times per second.
While effective, the constant heating and cooling cycles place stress on the printhead components.
How Epson’s MicroPiezo Technology Works
MicroPiezo printheads use piezoelectric crystals instead of heat.
When an electrical charge is applied:
- The crystal physically changes shape.
- This movement forces an ink droplet through the nozzle.
- No heating occurs.
The result is extremely precise droplet placement and better control over droplet size. Epson’s printhead can produce droplets as small as 3.3 picolitres.
Advantages of MicroPiezo Technology
Longer Printhead Life
Because there are no heating elements constantly cycling on and off, MicroPiezo printheads generally experience less thermal stress.
Better Ink Efficiency
The printhead can control droplet size more accurately, reducing wasted ink.
Higher Precision
The technology excels at:
- Fine text
- Detailed graphics
- Colour gradients
- Photo printing
Compatible with Pigment and Dye Inks
Piezo systems are more flexible regarding ink chemistry than thermal systems.
Setup Process, Connectivity, and Usability
Getting the Epson EcoTank ET-2911 running requires filling each tank manually with the bundled vacuum-packed bottles. Each bottle features a keyed design that physically prevents you from inserting it into the wrong tank.

After filling all four tanks, the printer runs an automatic charging cycle that takes approximately 10 minutes. The power light flashes during this process, and you cannot load paper or turn off the unit without wasting ink. This initial charge uses some ink to prime the print head, so the bundled bottles yield slightly fewer pages than replacement bottles. The charging cycle uses more of the black ink during this process which is normal.

The ET-2911 supports 802.11 b/g/n wireless standards and Wi-Fi Direct, allowing connection without a router. While there’s no touch screen you can download the Epson Smart Panel app from your phones app store; the app essentially acts like the touch screen for your printer which guides you through the whole setup process including printing functions after setup.
The switch panel on the printer itself does allow basic controls such as Wi-Fi controls, document scanning etc.

It’s best to setup the app as it makes the whole experience with the printer much more seamless.

The setup process is quite straightforward and the included user manual is helpful enough to get things going. Once everything is setup you get access to the Epson Smart Panel below.

Paper Handling and Capacity
The rear paper tray holds 100 sheets, which suffices for weekly home printing but will require frequent refills for heavier use. Paper loads with the glossy side up, short edge first.

Scanner and Copy Functions
The flatbed scanner delivers 1,200 x 2,400 dpi optical resolution, adequate for document digitization. Scanning and copying work through the control panel buttons or the Smart Panel app. Copy quantity maxes out at 20 sheets in standalone mode.

Print Quality and Speed
Photo Print Quality Results
Testing the Epson EcoTank ET-2911 with 4×6″ glossy prints revealed mixed outcomes. Photos emerge with decent color reproduction and visible fine details, but you’ll notice a grainy texture that’s typical of budget inkjet models. The printer achieves a maximum resolution of 5,760 x 1,440 dpi, which sounds impressive on paper yet translates to images that lack the smoothness of dedicated photo printers.
The ET-2911 takes 75 seconds to produce a single 10x15cm photo, which feels sluggish if you’re printing multiple images. Colors appear reasonably accurate for casual home use and decent enough for family snapshots and school projects; if you’re looking for better picture quality prints, you’ll want to look elsewhere.
Here’s a side by side comparison of the color reproduction of the printer against one of my daughter’s favorite books.

Document Print Quality
Text documents fare better than photos. Black text prints with sharp edges and good contrast, making it readable even at smaller font sizes. Color documents maintain clean lines, though very fine details occasionally blur slightly. The printer handles everyday office work without issues.
ISO Print Speed: 11 ppm Black, 6 ppm Color
The Epson EcoTank ET2911 delivers 11 pages per minute for black documents and 6 pages per minute for color. First page out takes 10 seconds for monochrome and 16 seconds for color. These speeds suit light home use but drag during larger print jobs.
Borderless Printing Capabilities
Borderless printing works up to 10x15cm (4×6″) size, which covers standard photo prints. The feature functions reliably, though print quality may decline slightly at paper edges. You’ll need to use Epson’s recommended paper types for best results, as borderless mode takes longer than standard printing and slightly enlarges images beyond paper boundaries.
What I like with the Epson Smart Panel app is that you can simply select a photo/document and send it directly to the printer from your phone.
Consumables
The Epson ET-2911 uses T522 replacement bottles that costs AU$21.99 each at the time of writing. With yields of 4,700 black pages and 7,500 color pages per replacement bottle, the math works out to roughly 0.47 cents per black page and 0.29 cents per color page. By comparison, cartridge printers typically cost 6.3 cents per black page and 17.5 cents per color page.

There’s also a maintenance box which collects excess ink when printing. While the maintenance box does last a long time, it currently retails around AU$29.

Potential Drawbacks of EcoTank printers
Printhead Clogging
This is not an issue simply on the ET-2911; rather a common issue across all EcoTank or Inkjet printers. EcoTank printers require regular use. If left idle for extended periods, ink can dry within the nozzles and cause clogs. Community discussions frequently mention that users who print infrequently may need occasional cleaning cycles which wastes ink during this process.
If you’re working from home, the ideal scenario here is to setup a biweekly scheduled job that would automatically print a color printout to keep the nozzles and printhead in a healthy state. Unlike some competitors where printheads are considered replaceable consumables, the printhead in EcoTank models are generally intended as a permanent component. If a severe clog develops outside warranty, repairs can be expensive.
Since I mostly work from home, I have setup a PowerShell script as outlined below to run biweekly which will print out a page that tests all the 4 colors of the printer. I wish manufactures figured out a way to solve this issue, but for now this is the next best thing.

Conclusion
The Epson EcoTank ET-2911 delivers exactly what most home users need: reliable printing, excellent running costs, and modern wireless functionality. The EcoTank system remains one of the best solutions available for reducing the long-term cost of printing, and Epson’s PrecisionCore MicroPiezo technology continues to offer excellent text and colour quality.
Its biggest consideration is the nature of all tank based inkjet printers: they require regular use. If you’re the type of user who prints at least weekly, the ET-2911 can provide years of economical service. If you only print a few times a year, a laser printer may be a better choice.
The EcoTank ET-2911 would suite budget conscious families and students who print regularly but don’t need high speeds or professional grade output. It’s ideal for home offices or students who simply want a decent print job without all the bells and whistles.
