PRIME Gaming Mouse

Steelseries Prime Gaming Mouse

Inspired by the Rally car, the Steelseries Prime range of gaming devices have been engineered with one thing in mind; elite performance. The key characteristics of the Prime series is that it’s designed to be lightweight and streamlined to offer best in-class tech and innovation. Today we bring to you one of Steelseries’s latest offerings, the Steelseries Prime Gaming Mouse.

The Prime series is offered in 3 models to cater to varying budgets and performance requirements. You get the Prime as the entry point, the Prime+ and Prime Wireless.

Here’s a quick run down of the specifications between these models;

If you wanted the lightest mouse with the lowest price point, the Prime weighing at just 69 grams should be your best choice and it retails at US$69.99 (AU$119).

Closer look at the Prime Gaming Mouse

With Steelseries branding the retail packaging is simple and elegant.

Opening up the packaging you’re offered a neatly packed Prime mouse and a user manual and USB cable placed under the unit.

The Prime gaming mouse has an ergonomic design and feels comfortable during prolonged usage. Its contoured design isn’t obvious at initial outlook, yet it’s surprisingly comfortable. Two side buttons are also available for easy navigation. The USB cable is detachable for easy transport and is fully mesh enclosed.

TrueMove Pro Gaming Sensor

The heart of the Prime gaming mouse rest underneath with what Steelseries calls the TrueMove Pro Gaming Sensor. I’m not sure the design decision around having the CPI selector button at the bottom. This makes it highly inconvenient if you want to switch between different settings. Thankfully the settings can be toggled through via software provided by Steelseries.

The mouse glides are well designed and it simply glides through on any surface.

According to Steelseries, the TrueMove Pro sensor delivers 2 times the accuracy than the competition when it comes to mouse precision movement. That’s a pretty bold statement, but we shall go more into this shortly.

Optical Magnetic Switch

Another key feature of the Prime Gaming mouse is its Prestige OM™ Switches. Leveraging neodymium magnets the switches are rated for 100 million clicks. The switches use infrared light beams to provide accurate lightning fast response times critical for game play.

The keys also provide a distinctly different clicking sound as aptly demonstrated below.

Steelseries GG Software

The Steelseries GG software available for free download allows you to customize the Prime mouse as you desire. It offers a full macro editor, designating specific functionality to buttons, RGB controls can all be managed through the app. The app allows one to adjust the CPI, polling rate, acceleration/deceleration rates of the mouse.

The software is very intuitive and is automatically prompted for download when Windows install the drivers for the mouse.

Performance and Conclusion

The Prime Gaming mouse fits under your hand very comfortably, regardless of whether you use a Claw, Palm or Finger grip. Note however that it’s intended for right handed only and is not ambidextrous by design. The smooth textured top surface used in its construction feels warm to the touch and provides a very good grip & hand feel.

We love how the buttons feel and work and their clicks proved to be accurate and smooth. With a reported 100 million click lifespan the Prime gaming mouse should see you comfortably through the next few years’ use regardless of your play style.

The mouse would glide easily with very little friction during our gameplay even when not using a mouse pad. Only minor concern to raise here is that due to its extremely light weight (69g), the mouse may not be to the liking of everyone. Regardless the mouse was easy to control and those fast reaction shots should be handled easily.

The Steelseries GG software is powerful and certainly a must have if you purchase this mouse. The ability to make granular customizations quickly and easily is key to anyone’s gameplay and the GG software makes this a reality.

The TrueMove Pro Gaming sensor has proved itself to be very accurate to represent actual user movement. While some would welcome the light weight of the Prime gaming mouse some may not be so welcoming. It’ll all depend on your style and preference.

All in all, the Prime gaming mouse offers a simple no frills design with some high quality tech at its heart. It’s expected to hit the shelves at a retail price of AU$119 which is no doubt competitively priced.
