PC Case Gear LED Keyring Torch
Introduction
The product we’re looking at today is something totally different to the typical hardware gadgets we look at. Nevertheless this product really impressed me a lot and I’m sure most of you would enjoy getting your hands on one of these. LED keyrings have been around for some time now, even though most of them are not as compact as PC Case Gear’s LED keyring. I’m sure most of you are familiar with the laser keyring that’s offered in many retail stores. The only drawback to these is that they are ridiculously high priced, and I don’t see much point in spending over $20 for a product of this nature. Thankfully PC Case Gear have brought in these lovely keyring torches which are one of the cheapest and most practical devices I have come across. So lets take a close a look at this product.
The LED keyring is surprisingly very small and lightweight with a dimension of 45 x 32 x 15mm. That’s the length of half your index finger and it’s around 1/2 inch thick. This is definitely one of the smallest keyrings I have ever come across. Instead of a laser diode, this keyring has a high-intensity LED, which is offered in blue, green and red.
The rubber circle in the middle acts as the switch, and there are two on either side for on/off. The switch proved to be slightly tight at first, but after a few days of usage it turned out to be fine. The main reason this unit is made so compact and tight is to ensure that it’s kept waterproof. Yeah that’s right, the unit will also work under water. The mechanics of the LED keyring is as simple as it gets. Two CR2016 batteries (Watch batteries) power the unit, and the LED light is connected to it when the “on” button is pressed. I haven’t got to the point of fully testing out the life of the battery, however considering the unit only powers a 5mm LED I’m sure it’ll last quite a long time, depending on usage of course. Just so that everyone gets an idea, I have used this unit every night for the past 8-10 days and it’s still as bright as when I got the unit. If you need to replace the batteries simply take the unit to a electronics shop and get them replaced, or you could do it on your own, it’s just like changing the batteries of a flash light.
Brightness
I must admit this is the first time I have ever come across a LED light which is so bright. You cannot directly look at it from even a distance as it’s so bright. At first I thought there would be some special circuitry to make them so bright, which was proved wrong as soon as I opened the unit. To be frank I really did think it to be just marketing puff when everyone who sells similar units say that these include ultra bright LEDs. After examining them myself, strange as it may sound, the marketing guys weren’t lying. The best part is that, unlike a laser where the light will be concentrated on just one point, the LED keyring will disperse light to a wider area.
Value
As I mentioned in the beginning of this review, spending over $20 for a unit of this nature would certainly be a waste. PC Case Gear offers their LED Keyrings for only AUD$14.95, which makes them ideally priced. $15 is decent as it gets, and it’s well worth the price. Think about it, it’s almost the price of going to a movie, yet it offers a tangible product.
I really couldn’t find any fault with the product since it offers exactly what is meant to be offered. The LED keyring has proved to be very useful to me. It’s a great tool to find the mysterious keyhole that disappears in your car at night. 🙂 The design is very practical as well and fits in your pocket with no problems at all. It’s so lightweight, you won’t even know you’re carrying it. Above all this, the keyring is also waterproof, so what more can you ask for $15.
