Closer Look

The D-Link DWR-933 is offered in a simple package with all the essentials you need to get going.

The package consists of a quick start user guide and USB charger cable.

A 3000mAh battery powers the unit and D-Link advises it’s good for 14 hours of use, which seems ample.

There’s a USB port on the side of the DWR-933, a power and WPS button on the opposite side.

Opening up the rear cover, you’re offered with a Micro SIM card port and SD card slot which can hold upto 64GB. The SIM port is a bit flimsy to get the card in place, but that could be just my large fingers.

It’s good to have the Micro SD card in there, so users connected can easily share files between them with ease.

Usability

Turning on the unit, you’d see the display show a welcome message and go into the default display of SIM & Wi-Fi status.

Pressing the power button will cycle through screens which will show various metric screens that shows the data usage (which will be handy if you’re on a limited mobile plan) and also display the Wi-Fi passwords for each channel.

Once you connect clients to each Wi-Fi channel, the DWR-933 will show the client count for each channel on the display. Setting up and getting a client up and running was a breeze and there was no configurations required apart from entering the Wi-Fi password on the client.

Web Interface

You can further customize your setup with the D-Link DWR-933 via its web interface on http://192.168.0.1

On first login, it’ll prompt you to go through the setup wizard. Only change you’d want to make here is to your Wi-Fi and Admin settings.

There’s also a basic firewall which you can configure as desired. Stick to the defaults if you’re not sure, however it allows some basic level of control.

Power consumption can be further optimized by getting the DWR-933 to sleep when no clients are connected to it as well as setup the delay for the display to shut off.

Conclusion

With a price tag of AU$249.95 the D-Link DWR-933 isn’t priced too bad. Given that it allows you to free up your mobile without having to hot spot it and it’s incredible portability, makes it an ideal choice for those on the move.

For me personally, the DWR-933 has been a life saver. I keep it in my vehicle for all those long drives and have all my kids’ devices connect to it when on the move. This allows me to have just one single mobile plan thus saving me a few hundred a year. Even on family trips, off site work meetings, the D-Link DWR-933 will certainly be a wonderful companion to have. Given that you can also store and share data on the Micro SD card gives users that added benefit for quick data sharing.

Of course one limitation to the overall functionality of this device is the mobile reception and that’s not something we want to discuss here. Overall the D-Link DWR-933 4G LTE Cat 6 Wi‑Fi Hotspot is a well rounded product and delivers well for its intended purpose.
