The SteelSeries “Sensei Ten” Wired Ambidextrous Gaming Mouse is an update on the now 10 year old design of the original SteelSeries “Sensei” mouse. This updated version features the same ambidextrous design of the original mouse with a lowset grippy mouse wheel, adjustable DPI Settings & powerful 18,000 CPI optical sensor that SteelSeries are calling their best yet.

Also included now as part of the update are full RGB customisability and macros all adjustable through the SteelSeries Engine software which provides an easy way to change the pre-set DPI settings and colour profiles.

Packaging and In depth look

The Sensei Ten comes packaged inside a slip case enclosed box, complete with foam insert to prevent the mouse from rattling around inside the box during shipping. The resulting packaging is solid and heavy duty and certainly invokes the feeling of a premium product.

The mouse itself is constructed of a matt black plastic shell with soft curves – resulting in no harsh lines or fancy cut-out bits as we typically see on many modern gaming mice. One downside of this classic design however is the omission of a braided cable, which does detract from the premium yet understated design they seemed to be aiming for.

Gaming performance and General use

The Sensei Ten’s classic shape is a classic for a reason. It fits under your hand very comfortably, regardless of whether you use a Claw, Palm or Finger grip. The smooth matt plastic used in its construction feels warm to the touch (if not a tad soft) but still provides a very good grip & hand feel. The buttons all use mechanical switches, which gives a nice click to them and with a reported 60 million click lifespan – this mouse should see you comfortably through the next few years’ use regardless of your play style.

The included mouse-feet slide well over most surfaces, but as with any mouse, a proper mouse pad is where it will shine – as it will glide very easily, with very little friction. With its relative light weight (92g), this mouse is easy to control and should make those fast reaction shots in your games easily.

The SteelSeries Engine Software (free to download from SteelSeries’ website) is where this mouse truly shines. The software gives its owner complete control over every single aspect of the mouse’s features. It will allow you to adjust the poling rate, pre-set DPI settings, mouse smoothing and acceleration plus many more. Most fun of all – the software also enables you to fully customise its RGB settings, which allows you to create your own colour patterns and profiles, rather than having to use its pre-set lighting options.

Also included is a full macro editor which allows you to create macros for both mouse and keyboard buttons – including timing delays between button presses.

Conclusion

The Sensei Ten is a welcome revisit of a classic. The ambidextrous design is suitable for both left and right-handed users, with side buttons being positioned for easy reach regardless of which hand you are using. The construction feels top notch and the mouse design is both very comfortable, easy to grip and offers great flexibility in its use with either claw, finger or palm grip customization.

The standout SteelSeries Engine Software is powerful, easy to use and gives the mouse’s owner the ability to blend the mouse in with any lighting profiles you may already be using for your PC (or simply to turn the lighting off if RGB annoys you).

One minor drawback is that the mouse could be felt as feeling slightly heavier than some of its similarly priced competitors, which may affect some more than others. Another minor drawback is the lack of a braided cable, which could have improved the product substantially (& perhaps was a design oversight) given this product is priced on the higher end of the spectrum.

All in all, this is still a very nice mouse with a simple, understated, classic design – paired with a powerful software editor that allows you complete customisation over almost every feature of the mouse.

A very nice nod to the past that is comfortable and familiar to use, and with some simple design tweaks could have made this a full marks score.
