Alloy FPS RGB – Design and Closer look

The HyperX Alloy FPS RGB comes in a elegant box and clearly labels the KAILH silver speed switches this keyboard uses. The keyboards RGB prowess is emphasized in the front picture. Turning the box over, you’re given a further rundown of the keyboard’s capabilities as well as some of the key capabilities of the KAILH silver speed switches.

Package

The package consists of a detachable USB braided cord, a quick start guide and the keyboard itself. The keyboard with its solid metal frame feels very solid and has enough weight to it to ensure no movement during heavy game play.

Dedicated media keys is a feature HyperX have decided not to go with on the Alloy FPS RGB. We would like to see manufacturers making it a point to include this simple yet useful feature, especially when you spend over $100 on a keyboard. Instead you need to take the two handed approach via the FN key. F9-F11 keys act as your media controls.

Media controls

The HyperX Alloy FPS RGB has onboard memory for 3 profiles which can be accessed via the F1-F3 keys. These profiles can be utilized in case you don’t install the NGenuity software. (More on this later)

Game mode can be enabled to prevent accidental keypresses of the Windows key. We like the concept of a detachable USB power cable and all 1.8m of it. Those on the constant move would know the pain of damaged power cords and this most certainly is a great thought. There’s also a USB 2.0 pass-through port, however note that this can only be used for mobile phone charging.

Going back to the keys, you can see the exposed bottom half of the Kailh Silver Speed switches. Taking off the key cap exposes the switches which sits nicely within the steel top plate of the HyperX Alloy FPS RGB. Each switch has a LED right at the top which sits right under the lettering on the key caps.

One of the main highlights of the HyperX Alloy FPS GRB is its use of Kailh silver speed switches. They are a direct competitor to Cherry MX silver speed switches. Some of the main differentiators is the low operating force and extremely short actuation point. While day to day you may not not truly appreciate the benefits of this, for eSport gamers even a split second advantage would mean the difference between life and death.
