D-Link DCS-8600LH Full HD Outdoor Wi-Fi Camera
Performance and conclusion
The D-Link DCS-8600LH in addition to providing motion detection, it also provides the capability to be activated by detection of sound above a certain decibel level.
In our testing we found that the motion detection to be slightly flaky and would sometimes completely miss out from recording direct movement in front of the camera. I would expect to see some form of firmware update from D-Link to address these minor quirks. On the other hand, we found the sound detection to compensate for the limitations of the motion detection.
Through the mydlink app you can set the desired sound level you want the camera to activate and start recording.
We covered in detail the capabilities of the “mydlink” app in our Omna DCS-2802KT review so if you want to read more up on the app itself, please click here.
Picture quality wise, we did a comparison between the camera provided with the Omna DCS-2802KT and below is a comparison of the two.

The DCS-8600LH seems to lack some of the vibrant color that’s captured by the DCS-2802KT cameras. Nevertheless the picture quality is still good and we like the fact that it records the date and time in its recordings which can be handy.
Here are more images captured during dusk and complete darkness, which is impressive. The night vision is only good for around 7 meters, however it is good enough to capture details required.

Final thoughts
The D-Link DCS-8600LH works as a great entry level camera for those on a budget and don’t want the hassle of messy wiring. It offers a straight forward installation process and you can be up and running in under 30 minutes.
The camera offers a great 135-degree wide angle view which gives good coverage if placed at the right location. Our only reservation with the camera was its slightly poor performance when it came to motion detection and we hope D-Link comes up with a firmware update for that soon. As mentioned however this was compensated with the sound detection mode available.
The DCS-8600LH also has a smart touch to it with integrations to Alexa, Google and IFTTT. With the right smart device, you can simply offer voice commands to view the camera in play. While the camera is targeted as an outdoor unit, you can certainly use it indoors as well.
The D-Link DCS-8600LH retails around AU$209 – AU$278 depending on the retailer you go with. If you’re after a basic outdoor Wi-Fi camera with no major frills, this is certainly a good option.
