OMNA DCS-2802KT Wire Free Security Camera Kit
Installing the DCS-2802KT Camera kit
Most security camera systems out there require a few hours of your time to get going, but that’s not the case with the OMNA DCS-2802KT kit. To be honest the only time consuming part of the whole process was finding a good spot for placing the cameras.
The advantage of wireless cameras is that you can place them in places you’d normally not be able to place conventional wired cameras without having to break the bank. Be it a shed out the back, pool area or carport, installing these cameras would be a breeze.
One thing to keep in mind is that the cameras themselves have a strong magnet at the back of the unit. This means that the cameras will stick to any metal source if you didn’t want to use the provided mounting brackets.
We found that the cameras would attach quite easily to colorbond gutters if you wanted to install them that way and we found the magnet to be quite strong and was easily able to sustain the weight of the camera.
The cameras are IP65 rated which means it’s both dust and water proof protecting it from the elements if installed outdoors. The choice is yours on the best location for the cameras, however we found that installing one at the entrance provided the best utilization of the two way audio feature of the camera. This allows one to have a conversation with anyone knocking at your door without lifting a finger and best of all, you can interact with a stranger while away from your home. We found the audio to be quite clear, although the audio clarity can distort depending on your internet connectivity.
Installation – First steps
The first steps before hooking up the cameras is to power on the hub, connect it to your router for internet connectivity. Once you have 3 green lights on the hub it’s time to press the sync button on top of the hub as well as the sync button on each of the cameras.
The green LED on the cameras will start blinking and once fully synced will show a solid green light to confirm they have synced with the hub. Now you’re ready to install the cameras in their respective positions.
Threaded mount or snap mount
There are two types of mounts provided with the OMNA wire free security camera kit so you could use either depending on where you decide to place the cameras.
While there are 2 snap mounts provided, there’s only 1 threaded mount so choose wisely on how you want to install the cameras. Make sure the placement of the cameras do not obstruct its view and place them at least 7ft above ground for best results.
One thing we didn’t quite like about these mounts is that if placed outdoors anyone could simply pull them right off their mounts without much effort (Given that they attach to the mounts through magnetic force). Even with the threaded mount all it takes is one to simply unscrew the camera from its base. As such, given the price of this kit it’s prudent to place them inside your compound if placing outdoors, rather than a car porch unless of course they’re installed high enough which can be considered safe. Last thing you don’t want is for this to be an expensive learning experience.
While we do understand the thinking behind D-Link for providing these types of mounts for ease of installation, and easy detachment for recharging, it could in turn limit one’s options on installation.
mydlink app installation
Once the cameras are placed, all that’s remaining is to download the “mydlink” application for either Android or IOS.
Once downloaded and installed, open the app and it’ll prompt you to scan the QR code at the back of the hub. This code is unique to your device, so do not share it around. Follow the onscreen prompts and you’ll be done in under 5 minutes.
Well that pretty much covers the whole installation process. Kudos to D-Link to making this process as seamless as possible, from installing the cameras to getting the software up and running.
