Arctic Cooling sent us their retail version of the M551 gaming mouse. The retail box is very detailed and filled with information regarding the features of the unit. The front of the box has a clear cover giving us a good view of the M551 before actually purchasing it.
The Arctic M551 comes with a small user manual in addition to the mouse, which details out the features of the mouse even further along with how to activate the 3 sensitivity levels it offers. They also include a Arctic Cooling case sticker as well if you fancy putting one on your casing.
Installing the M551 does not require any additional software and can be directly plugged into the USB port of your PC.
Taking a closer look at the Arctic M551, it offers you the standard left and right buttons as well as a rigged scroll wheel in the middle. At the center point of the M551 you are offered with a DPI switch, which allows you to change the DPI setting of the mouse from 800, 1600 and 2400 dpi depending on the intensity of the application in concern. There are 3 LED indicators at the rear left hand side of the mouse where it visually indicates the current dpi setting of the mouse.
The ergonomics of the Arctic M551 is pretty impressive. The left side of the mouse has a grooved area where you can rest your thumb while holding the mouse and the right side sports a grooved area to rest your ring finger while the last finger rests on the desk. It’s not everyday that you see mice sporting such ergonomics which is very impressive. Note however the Arctic M551 is designed for right hand users only. The unit fits snugly within your palm and is extremely comfortable allowing for hours of continuous gameplay.
The cord of the M551 is specially coated to eliminate line tangles and during our testing we did not have any problems with the cords tangling together. Further to this there are 5 gliding feet on the bottom of the Arctic M551 allowing it to smoothly move along any surface.
Conclusion
Having used the Arctic M551 for over a month now I must say this is truly a fantastic mouse to have. It basically offers what anyone would want for from a good mouse; good ergonomics and smooth and accurate movement. With a price tag of only US$ 24.95 this is a steal considering some of the competition out there. So if you’re in the look out for a decent gaming mouse with good ergonomics without having to think twice about the money factor, I would recommend the Arctic M551.
