CRU DataPort SecureDock

Performance:

The unit we received from CRU-DataPort came with a 500GB hard drive and tests were done on this drive. Make note however you can upgrade this drive to fit your needs.

As the tests show there’s hardly any noticeable performance hit while using the DataPort SecureDock. It performs on par with the speeds you would expect during normal operation without the SecureDock.

Conclusion:

CRU-DataPort offers the Dataport SecureDock in 5 varients. Depending on your budget they offer the unit with no hard drive, 500GB, 1TB, 1.5TB and 2TB variants. The basic model with no hard drive will set you back around US$274 while the 2TB model can go upto around $600. CRU-Dataport has a listing of resellers for their products (Click here for list) or you can purchase one from their own online store.

From a price point the Dataport SecureDock might be out of reach for most home users considering the cost of a basic hard drive enclosure is around $30. However security is a very subjective question and given the security threats around at present times no one is really safe from data theft. The target market for this product would ideally be SME and large enterprises whose data is extremely sensitive in nature. However if you as an end user require mobility as well as good protection for your data, the DataPort SecureDock is second to none. Its military grade AES 128bit encryption will ensure your data will not be readable by any means in the event it lands in the wrong hands (It’ll most likely take a few years to break the encryption using supercomputers). Of course you need to make sure the encryption key isn’t placed on the drive when it’s not in use or the game is over if you loose the drive.

One of the biggest advantages of the Dataport SecureDock is it’s High-Speed hardware processor that encrypts/decrypts data at full disk bandwidth. End users would hardly feel any difference using the drive while reading or writing data to it, even though one would expect some latency during the encryption/decryption process. The Dataport SecureDock has been tested for 3Gb/s full duplex operation when connected through the eSATA port.

To summarize, if you’re looking for mobility and superior encryption to protect your valuable data the Dataport SecureDock comes with a double thumbs up recommendation. Only negative point is its price which makes it not affordable to the average user. As we all know security is never cheap and always comes at a price and if your data is of immense importance to you the price of the SecureDock is negligible. Its on the fly encryption and military grade 128bit AES encryption certainly makes it a number one choice when making a purchasing decision.
