PC AirCon PAC 400

Installation

Installation of the PC AirCon PAC 400 is very simple. First you need to identify where exactly you’re going to place the unit. If you decide to install it in the top most drive bay, you will only loose one 5 ¼ drive bay, however the cooling effectiveness at this position isn’t the best and sometimes could even raise the temperature. The lower you go the better; however this would result in loosing two drive bays. If you can live with that, then by all means install the PC AirCon in a lower drive bay

The PC AirCon when used in “Snow” mode draws in a whopping 48 – 52 Watts of power, so you need to have its own power connector without any other device attached to it. Waffer technology recommends a PSU of around 350Watts; however I would suggest having something larger as this unit really drains the life out of a PSU. Besides, if there’s no restriction in power supply, the Peltier’s effectiveness increases as well. So a PSU in the range of 400Watts and above would be ideal.

Once everything is installed, turn on the system and turn the PC AirCon on. You’ll see that the LED screen displays the temperature of the air blowing into the system.

Performance

According to Waffer technology, the beauty of the PC AirCon PAC 400 lies on the fact that it does not focus only on cooling one single component, and rather cools the whole system, contrary to conventional cooling.

“Figure 1 shows the concept of the component level thermal solution. The figure depicts the temperature of a specific component is reduced by the matching cooler, and other components/chips are cooled by the respective coolers. So cooling is a “local event”, limited to one component/chip, within the system.

“Shown in Figure 2 is the system level thermal solution concept. Here the system temperature is reduced, and therefore the temperatures of all components/chips within the system are brought down. The cooling in this way is a “global event”, affecting all components/chips within the system”

As the illustrations show, the PC AirCon PAC 400 is designed as a total system cooler rather than focusing on one single component. In order to test the unit we decide to use a Midi tower setup in order to depict harsher operating conditions. Make note though, you must ensure the air flow of the PC air con is not blocked by any wires or devices to provide the best cooling efficiency.

We tested the unit using a few standard benchmark programs to increase the CPU & system temperatures. Below are the scores taken from external temperature monitors of the system.

Conclusion:

Waffer technology corporation certainly deserves credit for introducing the PC AirCon PAC 400 cooling unit to the PC community. At the moment however there are a few more developments that need to go into this product before it’ll really catch on with its enthusiasts, simply because while the performance of the PC Aircon is good, it currently doesn’t show a considerable advantage to other cooling solutions in similar price range. Nevertheless what must be considered is, the PC AirCon has certainly introduced a new concept in cooling systems and I’m sure Waffer technology will be soon coming out with a device that’ll overcome all the shortcomings of this revision. Moreover, unlike conventional cooling solutions, the PC AirCon PAC 400 does not focus only on one component and rather focuses on the whole system in terms of cooling them, which no other cooling solution currently in the market can do. Currently the PC AirCon PAC 400 isn’t available for purchase, but it should be retailing around US$70 price range. Overall we’re quite impressed with what the PC AirCon PAC 400 has in offer, even though the current version doesn’t perform too much to our expectations. It still does work quite well and since this unit was tested in a Midi tower setup, we’re happy with the outcome.
