Jazz Speakers J9938B 5.1 Private Cinema Theater System
To test the speakers we got hold of a few DVD’s and played. The DVD’s we had at the time were Fast and the Furious and The Eagle’s “Hell Freezes Over” live concert. Looking from the specs we did realize that this system wasn’t going to give us thumping bass. The frequency response is listed as 60Hz to 20,000Hz. So while we can expect good mid and high frequencies, lower frequencies won’t be that good.
We proceeded onto play Fast & Furious and I must say I was quite impressed with what I heard. The lack of bass was quite evident and proved our earlier predictions. The high frequencies and mid ranges were however very impressive. While the grunt of all those muscle cars were reproduced but the sub lacked the oomph we were looking for. This does not mean that the sub is useless. For its range it’s definitely better than what I have come across in the market and if you’re not too particular about bass this system will be very decent. The 5.1 surround sound worked quite well. When cars go whizzing past you, you can actually feel the sound changing from speaker to speaker giving a very realistic outcome. Ideally, as I mentioned before this system is good for a small room or office for people who would want a cheap 5.1 speaker system.
Next we played the Eagles concert. In this instance however, our experience was much better than before. The high and mid ranges were quite impressive and reproduced the instrument sounds very well. The lack of overall power is another drawback on this system. Then again, this system isn’t expected to produce earth shattering power, but rather create an surround sound atmosphere. So keep that in mind if you intend to purchase this system.
We also needed to test these speakers to see how well they do in gaming environments. So we played a few games such as Commanche 4, Unreal Tournament 2003. Here too the system performed to our expectations. The same deficiencies as before were still experienced, however the overall effect given by the 5.1 surround sound compensated for most of it. It’s truly much better than hearing through a 2 or 3 piece speaker system. The environment 5.1 systems creates is simply amazing when playing games.
Conclusion
Overall we were very impressed of what is offered by the J9938B. If you wish to add more spice to this system, Jazz speakers now offers a system with Dolby Digital Decoding called the J9938. It’s the same set of speakers as the J9938B but with the additional decoding capabilities.
If you’re currently looking to replace your cheap desktop speakers or want some sleek looking speakers for you office with 5.1 surround sound capability at a very affordable price range, you should certainly give the J9938B a shot. Even though it lacks in power and deep bass, it would be ideal for a small environment where you do not want loud music.
So if your audio requirements aren’t very specific and you’re not looking for some high end home theater system, the J9938B will certainly give you great value for money.

Hi,
I got this sounds sytem around 16 years back, and two of the 5 satellite outputs are not functioning anymore.
I am fairly sure I cannot get this fixed (unscrewed the back of the subwoofer and didn’t see any glaring connection issues), but even as a 3.1 system it fills my room with sound.
This is a very good product for such a modest price!
Indeed Chris, it’s a pity you can’t buy their products anymore. Good to see that you’re still enjoying this system after so long.
