Introduction
* The TimeDate KeyGhost USB/HUB Keylogger 2MB is available in a 30cm (pic above) form factor and is compatible with Mac and PC systems. There are a few improvements and new developments gone into the new TimeDate KeyGhost USB/HUB Keylogger in comparison to the older models. One of the main changes on this model is that plugging it into a PC is pretty much the same as plugging in a USB HUB. It uses the generic USB HUB drivers that are built into the OS so installation doesn’t require separate drivers. Since this keylogger has a built in USB HUB it allows for the device to be installed both upstream and downstream from internal and external USB HUBS. This allows it to record keystrokes on any number of keyboards connected to a USB HUB which is then connected through the Keylogger to the PC. The KeyGhost USB/HUB Keylogger allows all data traffic from other USB devices to pass through the keylogger with no issue at all. So for example if a keyboard has a built in hub on which say you would connect a thumb drive, digital camera or printer, the data will still pass through without a problem. This is beneficial in avoiding the Keylogger being detected or arousing any suspicion. Another improvement made is the USB/HUB Keylogger features a patent pending dual-mode time and date stamping on all keystrokes which can tell you when exactly something was accessed or typed. Even if wireless keyboards are used this is not a problem for the USB/HUB Keylogger provided the receiver is plugged to the Keylogger. Installation The package comes with a very detailed manual that goes through everything from installation to features of the KeyLogger. I'm not sure what if the retail package comes in the same manner as we did, nevertheless our package was received as per the picture below in a sealable bag. The actual installation of the KeyGhost USB/HUB Keylogger is extremely straight forward. It’s simply a matter of connecting the male side of the USB connector on the Keylogger to the target PC and connect either a USB HUB or keyboard to the other end of it. The device is recongnised fast and if you have already setup the device on another machine before installing on the target PC you'll be done in no more than 30 seconds. Now lets see how you setup the Keylogger before final deployment. Once the installation is complete a default password typed on any word processor or windows notebook will bring up the following menu. The first thing we did was to change the speed at which the KeyGhost USB/HUB Keylogger types in the characters on screen. Option 7 in the menu allows you to do this. The speed setting goes from 1-10 with 1 being the slowest. If you’re using the KeyGhost USB/HUB Keylogger on an old PC then you’ll have to keep it in a low setting for stability. However newer machines can handle higher speeds and we set ours to 7. When using the KeyGhost USB/HUB Keylogger menu you need to make sure you do not change the window you’re on until the menu is exited. Otherwise it’ll try to write the information onto whatever window that’s open resulting in undesired operation. Under the Medium –USB HUB only setting (Ghost keyboard only enumerates when required) the real keyboard and the USB HUB for the KeyGhost are shown in the device manager. Selecting High – Auto Sensing setting (USB Hub and Ghost keyboard only enumerate when required) makes the KeyGhost USB/Hub is invisible and will not be detected by any software scanner. Option 9 on the main menu allows you to select the date/time as well as changing the time stamping internal, and session timeout internal as well. These settings can be changed by you depending on the requirement.
The KeyGhost USB/HUB Keylogger retails for a hefty US$349, so this certainly isn’t for everyone. These devices are primarily targeted towards small to medium sized organizations concerned about their security. Like we said before how you use this device is upto you and KeyGhost will not be held liable for unauthorized usage. With 2MB of memory the KeyGhost USB/HUB can store upto 2,000,000+ keystrokes which equates to a lot. (I’d say at least 1 yrs worth or more) It also encrypts the information in a 128 encryption code for added security in the event someone tries to tamper with it. For its intended use, the KeyGhost USB/HUB Keylogger does an above average job. So far we’re yet to find a similar hardware keylogger which is this versatile, stable and offers this amount of stealth. This device is platform independent so it can even work on other operating systems. We tested it on UBUNTU Linux as well and it worked fine. Only drawback of this keylogger is its size. If it was a tab smaller this would have been the ultimate hardware keylogger in the market as it can even operate in a USB HUB environment logging keystrokes of multiple keyboards. If price is not a factor this is the device you need to have to get the job done properly; it offers excellent stealth (It’s virtually invisible to any software detection), great functionality and 2MB of memory with 128bit encryption. So if these factors are important to you there’s no better option right now than the KeyGhost USB/HUB Keylogger.
